Hargrave then made a grim observation, the result of a detachment caused by a combination of shock and sorrow: âThe only bad thing about this story, because all of our people are not hurt seriously, was the one young lady has an infant in the day-care centerâ¦. And when you get out, we had to actually -- the level we got out on the ground is the day-care playground. So we had to walk through that playground, and then we found out later that most of the babies and young children had died.â In fact, some of the children in the center did survive and, seeing their teachers and friends dead around them, ran from the area looking for the only people they thought might be able to help them. Calvin Johnson, a janitor at an Oklahoma hotel, recalled, âI was coming out of the courthouse when I was thrown against the building wall. Initially I saw glass falling and two cars in the middle of the street, and I thought there had been a car wreck. Then I saw the smoke and realized what had happened. I ran toward the Federal building, a block away. I wasn't concerned about myself, because I was on my feet. I wanted to see if there was something I could do for someone else. There were people running past me, all bloody, and I saw a kid running along -- he was 2 or 3 years old, a little black kid. I think he thought I was his father. He was hollering: âDad! Dad!â I picked him up and carried him to the other side of the street, to the corner where the courthouse is. By this time, the streets were loaded with people running from every side. I don't have any idea how he is, or how his family is. I don't remember what he was wearing, and if somebody was to hand him to me now, I wouldn't know if it was him or not.â
